Communications Officer - What
Does a Communications Officer Really Need to Know?
Regulations
Understanding of CAP regulations; how we interact with the USAF; how we
fit into the NTIA; and how we interact with the FCC are important to
being a communicator in the CAP. Not only do the regulations tell you
what you can and cannot do, they also provide guidance on a number of
other issues.
Activities
Practice
communicating! Train other communicators. Teaching Basic Communications
User Training (BCUT) classes not only passes along important skills for
new members, it also reinforces your own knowledge of the regulations.
If you
have not already taken an ACUT class, take one. This deep-dive into the
regulations greatly enhances your knowledge of communications within the
CAP. After taking the class, see what you can do to teach one!
Skills
Enhance
your skills by practicing them. Talk on the radio. Send emails (if you
normally do not). Use the fax machine. Being familiar with these items
is important to the operation and execution of the missions of the CAP.
Become
involved in communications training. There is no better way to reinforce
and demystify the world of communications than by having to explain and
demonstrate it to other people.
Work
towards obtaining SQTR skills related to communications – the MRO and
CUL are important positions and are greatly needed. Once obtained, gain
your SET qualification so you may train others in these positions.
Enhance
your knowledge of radio by examining books and online classes through
various organizations. You can search any bookstore or go to the Amateur
Radio Relay League and see what is available. Learn about amateur radio
and get your HAM license! Studying for the test will gain you valuable
communications understanding. |
