Inspector General - Career Track Information

CAPP 203 - Inspector General Specialty Track

Suggestions

CAPP 203 is your primary guide to follow in this specialty track. The ratings are the same as any other specialty track.  The first step following completion of Level I training is to complete the Basic Inspector General course. Upon completion of this level, one must earn the technician rating for promotion to Capt, the senior rating for promotion to Maj. and finally the master rating for promotion to Lt Col.

Unlike many other specialty tracks, there are no online tests to take. The IG specialty track requires on-the-job-training (OJT), the basic IG course (one day), the senior level IG course (two days) and the National Inspector General College (five days).  The national college can be attended in lieu of the basic and senior level classes.

OJT is accomplished by participating in inspections, investigations of complaints, scheduling, coordination with unit commanders, report writing, identification of systemic problems, identifying trends, and consulting with the group/wing/region commander.

The best assets one can have when entering this specialty track is the ability to ask questions, take notes, be analytical, and above all be able to write a comprehensive report in as concise and clear a manner as possible.

The second most important asset is the ability to deal with facts, interact with others in a proactive and non-threatening manner, and keep in mind that the purpose of an IG inspection is to help the inspected unit do better.
